expository writing/prose: writing that explains or analyzes
The Appendix to Frederick Douglass' Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is an example of expository writing. Douglass is explaining his various criticisms of Christianity. He does not want to alienate his Caucasian, Northern Christian audience by allowing misunderstandings of his claims about Christianity. This would lead to his being discredited by the majority of the country. Douglass explains, in this section, that he meant the Southern hypocritical Christianity, not Christianity itself, when he denounced the religion, saving himself from social and political ruin.
