Ambiguity

ambiguity: the multiple meanings, either intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, sentence, or passage. Ambiguity implies that either meaning could be correct

"...the old man and the rosy girl..."
-The House of the Seven Gables
                                     by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The phrase above is referring to Phoebe, the "light" in the novel The House of the Seven Gables. "Rosy" here could have multiple meanings. Phoebe is continually compared to a rose that has gone from bud to bloom in passages before this section and she is said to blush deeply when bid farewell by Clifford. "Rosy" could also refer to her youthfulness, to balance the phrase "old man." "Rosy" could serve to describe her appearance or  youthfulness, or complete the comparison between Phoebe and a blooming rose.
